Job summary

Laughing Earth, a diversified farm in Brunswick, NY, seeks a Livestock Manager for the season (April–November) with potential year-round work. The role involves planning pasture rotations and weekly tasks for meat chickens, egg chickens, pigs, cattle, and turkeys, plus daily feeding and maintenance.

You will assist with poultry slaughter and manage your team of assistants. Full-time, 40–50 hours/week, Tuesday–Saturday with one Sunday per month.

Qualifications

• Two or more seasons of experience with a pasture-based livestock operation.
• Tractor driving experience preferred.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to learn on their feet.

Laughing Earth is a diversified farm in Brunswick, NY whose mission is to feed the bellies and minds of our local community, both raising food in an ecologically-minded way and teaching our farm members and consumers about the true costs and benefits of food production.

On our 175-acre conserved farm, we raise vegetables for a 160-family Farm Share program and our on-farm store, as well as rotationally pasture a variety of livestock to sell the meat and eggs both on the farm and at the local farmers’ market.

Job description

Laughing Earth is seeking a Livestock Manager for the season, April through November, with an option to start earlier or continue year-round for the right candidate.

The Livestock Manager’s duties include seasonal and weekly task planning, as well as planning and execution of pasture rotations for meat chickens, egg chickens, pigs, cattle, and turkeys. The daily feeding, watering, and maintenance of these animal populations would fall in their purview, as well as assisting with the poultry slaughter, and management of their assistants and their schedules.

Full time, 40-50 hours per week, Tuesday through Saturday, with Sunday once a month.

Requirements

• Physical vigor to be able to carry heavy loads over uneven terrain in all weather over long days
• Familiarity with pasture-based livestock systems including the use of mobile electric fencing
• Ability to work unsupervised and accomplish complex tasks in a timely manner

Compensation

this position is: hourly, varies DOE, $18.00 - $22.00
