Dutch Barn Farm is in Stone Arabia, in Montgomery County, NY. We are dedicated to humanely producing quality lamb and purebred breeding stock, high quality solar vegetation management, and restoring the historic farmstead. We rotationally graze 400 ewes plus lambs in the summer and use a combination of barns and out-wintering during the winter. Lambs are raised on a grass-fed protocol. This position has the possibility of expanding to full manager and potential for farm buy-in/profit sharing.

The position is open until filled in early 2026.

Job Description

Dutch Barn Farm seeks a candidate with strong interests in farming, livestock, and agrivoltaics. This position will include responsibilities at both on farm (assistant to the farm manager) and multiple solar sites in Fulton and Montgomery County, NY.


This position is ideal for someone who is excited about a wide range of agricultural and agrivoltiac work in the Mohawk River Valley. Flexibility and curiosity are important attributes, along with a strong work ethic, and the ability to work independently or with a crew of individuals. Commitment to humane animal handling is essential. Seasonal work includes:

  • Summer: Barn cleaning and compost dissemination on fields, rotational grazing on farm and at solar sites, using electronet, grazing planning, hay-making including tractor operation and maintenance, barn loading, barn and fence maintenance, solar site mowing, selecting breeding stock and market animals, marketing meat, wool, and breeding stock, preparing lambs for market, and trucking.
  • Fall: Breeding for the subsequent winter’s lambing, fall grazing management, moving animals from solar sites, finishing market lambs and bringing them to market.
  • Winter: Infrastructure repair and equipment maintenance, planning for the following spring and summer, shearing, and preparation for lambing. Updating animal records and enhancing market avenues, Lambing begins in March and is the most intensive season on the farm.
  • Spring: End of lambing, managing ewe/lamb pairs, weaning, sheep deployment to solar sites, preparation for haying and grazing.


Year-round work includes livestock feeding and handling in indoor and outdoor areas, flock health monitoring and husbandry, management of animal records for health and breeding, basic farm construction and maintenance, equipment operation and maintenance, and assessing and improving the quality of pasture and hayfields. The employee will have an excellent opportunity to learn the ins and outs of solar grazing. Dutch Barn Farm is a small scale, diversified farm and additional animals include laying hens, horses, bees, guardian animals, a herding dog, and occasional finishing pigs.

  • Interest/experience in hay making and mowing equipment operation.
  • Interest/experience in farm management and accounting software
  • Interest in involvement in sheep breed advancement and leadership
  • Secondary education in agricultural science

Terms of Employment:

  • Full-time, approximately 40 hours/week, with seasonal variation
