Job summary

Latino Outdoors is seeking Deckhand/Educators to lead youth programs and handle sails on two ships in the San Francisco Bay area. This entry‑level, seasonal liveaboard role runs mid‑March to mid‑November, with a variable schedule that includes weekends and holidays.

It is paid biweekly on an hourly basis and classified up to full‑time, non‑exempt. Responsibilities include deck duties, safety checks, learning emergency procedures, teaching lessons to youth groups, and reporting issues.

Qualifications

• Passion for teaching students and the public about SF Bay ecology, local indigenous and nautical history, and culture.
• Willingness to work hard – days are long, and work takes place in an array of environmental and weather conditions. A good attitude when things get tough goes a long way.
• Experience working with youth (e.g., lifeguard, camp counselor, educator, or resident advisor)
• Attention to detail and an eye for safety.

Responsibilities

• Under the instruction of the vessel mate, deckhands handle sails, docklines, and boat equipment.
• Learn and understand the ship’s emergency procedures for scenarios including fire, man overboard, and abandoning ship.
• Perform routine chores and tasks to keep the boats clean, presentable, and in good working order.
• Learn basic seamanship skills and how to use a harness to climb aloft.
• Lead education groups through lesson plans and activities during programming.
• Inspect gear and report issues to the mate as part of periodic safety checks.
