Job summary

OpenAI is seeking systems software engineers to build, qualify, and maintain the OS foundation for frontier compute fleets. You will work with hardware engineers and vendors to bring up new platforms, integrate system components, and debug failures across firmware, disks, boot, and workloads.

Ideal candidates have deep Linux host-systems experience, including kernel development, distribution/image engineering, and automated validation.

Qualifications

Significant experience building, integrating, or operating production Linux systems (Ubuntu, Debian).
Deep experience with kernels, modules, drivers, or OS-image engineering.
Ability to write production-quality systems software and automation.

Responsibilities

Build and maintain the Linux host software stack for large GPU clusters, including OS images and drivers.
Design reproducible OS-image builds and configuration workflows for bare-metal and cloud fleets.
Integrate, test, and qualify kernels, modules, drivers, and firmware across hardware platforms; enable safe rollback paths.
Bring up new hardware platforms and compute SKUs, resolving firmware, driver, and compatibility issues.
Debug complex failures across boot, provisioning, firmware, disks, and drivers; create durable fixes and tests.
Improve provisioning and recovery to reduce manual intervention and scale fleet reliability.
Build diagnostics and tooling to validate and operate the host stack across the fleet.
