Job summary

OpenAI is seeking an experienced systems software engineer to define and build the host software stack for its next‑generation AI systems. You will work close to the hardware on performance‑critical software, including Linux kernel drivers, high‑throughput I/O paths, and system‑scale networking.

This role spans architecture, implementation, bring-up, debugging, and optimization across kernel, firmware, and userspace tooling.

Qualifications

Experience building low-level or performance-critical systems software.
Strong programming skills in C/C++, with Python for automation and debugging.
Proficient with Linux tooling and kernel-level development.

Responsibilities

Design, implement, and debug host-side systems software for AI infrastructure, including Linux kernel drivers and userspace components.
Build and optimize high-throughput, low-latency communication paths (RDMA, networking).
Develop software around PCIe, DMA, NICs, accelerators, and memory movement.
Bring up new hardware platforms and diagnose complex issues across kernel, firmware, networking, and hardware boundaries.
Create tooling for integration, testing, diagnostics, observability, and performance characterization.
Collaborate with hardware, networking, and platform teams to define interfaces and integration points.
Engage with external vendors to resolve issues and integrate technologies.
Contribute across the systems software stack as platforms evolve.
