Job summary

Qualifications

Linux End-User Systems Engineer

The BYU Office of Information Technology is looking to hire a Linux End-User Systems Engineer that is responsible for designing, deploying, managing, and securing Linux endpoints across the university. This role supports academic, research, administrative, and instructional computing needs by ensuring desktops, laptops, lab systems, and specialized workstations are reliable, secure, and aligned with institutional standards by providing scalable endpoint solutions, automating system management, and improving user experience.

This position is in the Office of Information Technology (OIT) and supports units across BYU.

What you will be doing in this role

As a Linux End-User Systems Engineer , you contribute directly to the BYU Mission by ensuring that campus Linux end-point computing needs are met. You will have opportunity to influence and support campus-wide projects and initiatives.

You are not required to have experience in all areas listed below. We are seeking the most qualified candidates; the more you have, the more likely you will be selected. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and skills.

Automation, Configuration Management, and Platform Engineering
  • Administer Linux endpoint management tools used for system deployment, configuration management, software distribution, and patching.
  • Automate endpoint administration tasks, such as system configuration, application installation, operating system updates, software installation, and general maintenance, using scripting in conjunction with system management and IT automation tools.
  • Evaluate, recommend, and build new Linux endpoint technologies, management platforms, automation tools, etc.
Linux Endpoint Administration
  • Manage and support Linux-based endpoints across the university, including desktops, laptops, labs, and specialized computing environments.
  • Develop and maintain standardized Linux endpoint images, configurations, and provisioning workflows.
  • Integrate Linux endpoints with university infrastructure and services, including identity management and single sign-on, and endpoint security systems.
Security Management and Collaboration
  • Promote secure endpoint practices while balancing usability, academic needs, and operational requirements.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of Linux endpoint standards, documentation, support models, and operational practices.
  • Collaborate with the campus community to ensure that solutions meet the university instructional and research computing needs.

Education and Experience:

Different levels of pay are assigned by the hiring department depending on experience/education/skills and business needs.

  • Level 54T: Bachelor's degree and 2 years of IT experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience. Supervision experience preferred (full-time or part-time). ( $88 ,000 to $114 , 0 00 approximate starting salary range).
  • Level 55T: Bachelor's degree and five years of related experience, or master's degree and 3 years, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience is required. Minimum of 2 years of technical supervision experience is preferred. ( $102 ,000 to $132 ,5 00 approximate starting salary range).

The actual compensation offered will take into consideration internal equity and may vary based on the candidate's job-related experience, knowledge, skills, and other relevant factors. Candidates with very significant work-related experience may receive an offer higher than the posted typical range.
