Job summary

PowerGrid Services in Tennessee is seeking a motivated entry-level Lineman Assistant to support installation, maintenance, and repair of energized overhead distribution systems. You will learn pole climbing from trained crews and work from bucket trucks in a safety-first team environment.

Responsibilities include assisting with pole setting, wire handling, tool staging, and following proper PPE and safety protocols. Travel, long hours, and storm response are part of the role as needed.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • 0-2 years experience in electrical line construction or completion of a recognized lineman training or apprenticeship program.
  • Ability to climb poles and work at elevated heights with proper safety gear.

  • Assist with installation, maintenance, and repair of overhead distribution systems.
  • Learn to climb wood poles using fall-protection systems and work from aerial devices.
  • Support assembly, framing, and setting of utility poles and line hardware.
  • Pull, sag, and tie wire under senior crew guidance.
  • Handle, load, and stage materials, tools, and equipment at job sites.
  • Maintain company vehicles, tools, and work areas in safe condition.
  • Perform groundwork including shoveling, tamping, and operating power tools.
  • Assist with installing/removing protective equipment and line cover-up.
  • Learn and follow safe grounding, flagging, and tagging procedures.
  • Identify and use materials, fittings, and connectors used in line work.
  • Participate in daily safety meetings and briefings.
  • Operate hand lines, tie knots, and perform basic rigging.
  • Observe PPE usage and minimum approach distances.
  • Support emergency restoration efforts and callouts.

Job Duties And Responsibilities

  • Learn to climb wood poles using approved fall-protection systems and work from aerial devices (bucket trucks).
  • Support the assembly, framing, and setting of utility poles and installation of line hardware.
  • Pull, sag, and tie wire under the guidance of senior crew members.
  • Handle, load, and stage materials, tools, and equipment at job sites.
  • Maintain company vehicles, tools, and work areas in clean and safe conditions.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support safe and efficient crew operations.
Qualifications and Job Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 0-2 years of experience in electrical line construction or completion of a recognized lineman training or apprenticeship program.
  • Ability to climb poles and work at elevated heights with proper safety gear.
  • Valid Driver’s License with acceptable driving record.
  • CDL Class A preferred (or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire).
  • Valid First Aid, CPR, and Pole Top Rescue certifications required or ability to obtain shortly after hire.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug and background screening and DOT physical.
  • Willingness to travel and work extended hours including nights, weekends, and storm response events.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions and outdoor environments.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety protocols.
  • Demonstrated reliability, teamwork, and positive attitude.
Preferred
  • Prior experience in utility construction or electrical distribution maintenance.
  • Familiarity with basic electrical theory and safe work practices.
  • Completion of a recognized lineman training program or pre-apprenticeship.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Basic knowledge of line construction materials and tools.
  • Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, and small equipment safely.
  • Understanding basic electrical safety concepts and minimum approach distances.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work under direct supervision.
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to learning.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work well with a team.
  • Physical ability to perform labor-intensive tasks for extended periods.
Working Conditions And Physical Requirements
  • Work performed outdoors in all weather conditions including extreme heat, cold, rain, and wind.
  • Exposure to electrical hazards, noise, and construction equipment.
  • Frequent bending, climbing, kneeling, stooping, and standing for long periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Regular work from heights using buckets or climbing equipment.
  • Must be able to wear and maintain PPE (rubber gloves, hard hats, FR clothing, harnesses).
  • Frequent vehicle operation and travel between job sites.
