Job summary

The City of Chicago, Department of Transportation, Division of Electrical Operations, is recruiting skilled Linemen for installation, repair and testing of aerial and underground electrical systems. Positions require journeyman status or equivalent apprenticeship paths and will operate at 2451 S Ashland, Chicago, IL 60608.

Work is Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, with potential adjustments as needed for street construction projects and public safety commitments.

Qualifications

• Successful completion of a US Department of Labor-registered Lineman apprenticeship training program and journeyman status.
• Alternative: DOL-registered Electrician/Wireman apprenticeship with journeyman status plus 2 years electrical construction experience.
• Alternative: Industry-sponsored Lineman apprenticeship with journey-level Lineman/line installer experience.
• Six years journey-level Lineman or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

• Installs and connects electrical lines, fiber optics, and cables to power sources.
• Splices and terminates copper and fiber optic cables.
• Cuts, bends, and fits conduit into trenches and installs new electrical wire.
• Relocates existing electrical installations and fixtures for street projects.
• Performs voltage tests to determine wire type and functionality.
• Locates and repairs breaks in underground electrical lines.
• Removes decayed or broken cable and installs new conduit and cable.
• Assembles and installs electrical fixtures such as light poles and traffic signals.
• Tests traffic signals and streetlamps to ensure proper operation.
• Prepares work activity reports.
• Operates an aerial boom to reach aerial wires when required.
• Marks cable locations on streets to prevent accidental damage.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS

Under supervision, performs installations, repairs, and tests of aerial and underground electrical wires, fixtures, and related equipment, and performs related duties as required

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Installs and connects electrical lines, fiber optics, and cables to power sources
• Splices and terminates copper and fiber optic cables
• Cuts, bends, and fits conduit into trenches and installs new electrical wire
• Relocates existing electrical installations and fixtures to facilitate street construction projects
• Performs voltage tests to determine type of wire and level of functionality
• Locates and repairs breaks in underground electrical lines
• Removes decayed or broken cable and installs new conduit pipe and cable
• Assembles and installs electrical fixtures (e.g., light poles, lamps, traffic signal heads, surveillance cameras)
• Tests on traffic signals and streetlamps to ensure proper operation
• Prepares work activity reports
• Operates an aerial boom from a line truck to reach aerial wires, as required
• Marks cable locations on streets to prevent damage by other work crews and contractors, as required

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training, and Experience

• Successful completion of a US Department of Labor-registered Lineman apprenticeship training program and journeyman status
• Should the above criteria not be fulfilled, the following options are available:
• Successful completion of a U.S. Department of Labor registered apprenticeship training program as an Electrician/Wireman and journeyman status, PLUS two (2) years of electrical construction work experience
• Successful completion of an industry- or company-sponsored apprenticeship training program as a Lineman, PLUS two (2) years of journey-level Lineman and/or an electrical power line or telecommunications line installer and repairer work experience
• Six (6) years of journey-level Lineman, and/or an electrical power line or telecommunications line installer and repairer work experience

THIS POSITION IS IN THE CAREER SERVICE

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires candidates to pass both a written job knowledge exam and a skills assessment. Test results will be sent out by the Department of Human Resources after test results have been analyzed and compiled. Candidates who pass both tests will be hired in seniority or lottery/random order.
