Line Station Cook
Department: NC State Dining
Employment Type: Temporary (Hourly)
Work Schedule: Shifts available early morning to late night, including weekends. Full‑ and part‑time positions available.
Responsibilities
- Prepare food according to standardized recipes and specifications.
- Perform small batch cooking and made‑to‑order items; set up and service the station, transport cooked foods to hot boxes for line service.
- Support front‑of‑house operations with backup food to eliminate lag time between changing out food items.
- Work as a grill cook or sushi cook, preparing cook‑to‑order menu items or following standardized recipes to ensure excellent quality, appearance, and taste.
- Work as a prep‑cook, following the cook’s directions or recipes, including preparation of ingredients for recipes and production of food items.
- Portion food products prior to cooking in accordance with standard portion sizes and recipe specifications.
- Check temperatures and proper storage of food items; follow guidelines to prevent contamination and spoilage.
- Operate all kitchen equipment safely and as recommended by the manufacturer.
- Clean utensils, workspace, tables, shelves, and equipment in accordance with maintaining a Grade “A” Sanitation rating.
- Perform other duties as assigned to meet NC State Dining business needs and may be asked to assist in other locations.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalency.
- Be dependable and manage time efficiently.
- Ability to work proficiently in a busy kitchen; adapt to varying customer volume with urgency.
- Follow written and verbal instructions, completing all tasks with excellence.
- Communicate effectively with customers, supervisors, and peers; work cohesively as part of a team.
- Provide outstanding customer service and remain professional and respectful under pressure.
- Knowledge of equipment, cooking methods, measurements, and food safety.
- Ability to follow safety procedures; handle sharp items, hot food, and kitchen equipment safely.
- Position requires standing for long periods and ability to work in hot and cold conditions.
- Must be able to lift up to 60 lbs with or without reasonable accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Culinary Arts education (certificate, diploma, or degree).
- One year of commercial cooking experience or previous grill and/or sushi cook experience.
- Serve Safe certification.
- Demonstrated understanding of proper food safety, cleaning, and sanitation procedures.
Benefits
Hourly position with a required 32‑day break at the end of 11 months. Superior performance may lead to renewal of employment and/or advancement into a benefits‑eligible permanent position.
