Job summary

American Electric Power (AEP) is seeking an Apprentice Line Worker to assist in the installation, maintenance, and inspection of overhead and underground transmission and distribution facilities. You will learn to operate line equipment, climb structures, and work on energized and de-energized circuits under supervision.

Requires a high school diploma or GED; no experience required, though line work or school education is preferred.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Line work experience or line school education preferred.
• Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license.
• CDL beginners permit within 60 days.

Responsibilities

• Assist with the assembly, installation, maintenance, removal and inspection of electrical transmission and distribution facilities.
• Demonstrate ability to perform ground person duties under supervision.
• Assist with loading, unloading, handling, maintaining, installing and removing poles, towers and structures.
• Operate Company equipment after training; climb poles and work on de-energized conductors and equipment.
• May work on conductors energized up to 260 volts under supervision; later operate digger/derrick and aerial devices.
• Assemble and install line material and hardware; inspect rigging equipment.
• Splice primary and secondary overhead wires with proper tools.
• Test de-energized lines and maintain PPE and equipment; participate in safety drills.
• Maintain records, meters and vehicle/equipment maintenance; report irregularities.
