Job summary

Caltech is seeking an Associate Cook to work under supervision on semi-routine tasks, preparing standard or specialty foods, setting up and sanitizing kitchens, and assisting in menu development and stock management.

Responsibilities include cooking a range of dishes, updating recipes, maintaining hygiene, and ensuring readiness for meals and special events while adhering to safety standards.

Qualifications

  • Must have culinary certificate and at least 2 years in a busy a la carte restaurant or 3 years in a dine-in facility.
  • California Food Handler card or ability to obtain within 30 days.
  • Must be able to carry a minimum of 50 pounds of cooking utensils and supplies.
  • Must read/write basic English and follow instructions.
  • Must perform basic math for ingredient quantities and conversions.

Responsibilities

  • Perform full range of cooking skills for main dishes and sides.
  • Prepare and cook meats, fish, vegetables, gravies, sauces, soups, and bakery items per recipes or orders.
  • Cook from scratch or make substitutions as requested.
  • Adjust recipes as needed and may create new recipes.
  • Clean and sanitize work areas and equipment according to protocol; deep-clean on schedule.
  • Ensure ServSafe compliance in the kitchen area.
  • Prepare ingredients for next day based on menu offerings; assist in menu planning.
  • Ensure staff and stations are ready for meals and events in a timely manner.
  • Verify all equipment is functioning properly; provide leadership as needed.
