Job Description

Johnson County Wastewater (JCW) is responsible for the safe collection, transportation, and treatment of wastewater generated by our community. Our work ensures that lakes, rivers, and streams remain free from disease-causing pathogens and pollutants that are harmful to public health and the environment.   • Under limited and indirect supervision, completes a variety of routine, semi-skilled, skilled, and manual tasks related to wastewater collection system cleaning and inspection. Works on an assigned crew providing assistance and support for various routine and non-routine labor tasks, such as pulling hoses, setting up traffic control at work sites, removing debris from sewer lines, determining materials needed, setting up equipment, preparing materials and tools, cleaning holding tanks and sewer lines using high-pressure hoses and other equipment, and taking inventory of materials on a work truck. Assists with more complex specialty crew work involving jet vac trucks, CCTV trucks, or related equipment. Provides training and support to other staff in routine work functions and assists with training new employees.
  • Operates a variety of vehicles, light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment, and tools. Follows established safety protocols, including wearing personal protective equipment and following guidelines for confined space entries. Carries an on-call phone or pager and responds to emergency and after-hours calls, either as the subject matter expert or by assisting other staff with complex or less routine calls.
  • Enters data into maintenance and tracking systems. Completes routine preventative maintenance and more complex preventative tasks. Responds to customer service inquiries, escalating complex questions or concerns to a crew leader or supervisor. Understands how to operate equipment safely, such as a Jet Truck, and may occasionally take trucks out as an active crew leader.
Job Requirements

Minimum Job Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent, a Class B CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements, and an acceptable driving record are required.

Johnson County Government requires reference/background screening for all positions. Specific criteria may vary by Department/Agency.

Preferred Job Requirements:

One year of experience with light, medium, or heavy-duty equipment is preferred.

Physical, Environmental, and Special Working Conditions:

Excessive standing and walking; exposure to extreme temperatures, fumes, chemicals, heights, loud noises, raw sewage, and confined spaces. Lifting and carrying up to 80 lbs., pushing/pulling 75 lbs., climbing, bending, crouching, kneeling, and balancing. On-call/stand-by work is required. Safety-sensitive and weather-essential job. All County employees may be called upon to assist in emergency situations. Uniform required. Use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, boots, gloves, and other safety tools is mandatory.
