Job summary

Essential Job Functions

The lighting technician has the primary responsibility of performing all general theater and performing arts venue lighting technician and stagehand duties. Work hours are scheduled as needed and vary depending on artist load-in/load-out schedules, theater usage, performance schedules, facility user needs, and theater maintenance requirements. Work should be expected to be completed on weekdays, weekends, evenings, early mornings, and occasional holidays. The work schedule will be as flexible as production schedules and other work requirements allow.

Employment Standards
  • One to two years of prior basic stagehand/theater experience, with an emphasis on stage lighting, programming, and lighting techniques.
  • Experience with show load-ins and load-outs.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to read and create stage lighting plots.
  • Ability to communicate calmly, effectively, and professionally to resolve conflicts, ask informed questions, and relay information to others.
  • Experience programming and operating lighting consoles, primarily the ETC Eos family of consoles.
  • Ability to hang and circuit lighting instruments according to light plots.
  • Ability to focus lighting instruments for specific performance needs.
  • Ability to operate or direct the use of follow spots.
  • Ability to direct the reset of lighting instruments to the house standard plot as needed.
  • Perform routine maintenance on lighting and support equipment, including general theater equipment.
  • Maintain inventory and organization of lighting instruments, accessories, gels, and gobos.
  • Collaborate with other production departments, including video, audio, communications, carpentry, front of house, and other production crews.
  • Ability to work at heights in catwalks, grids, and on personnel lifts.
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple projects concurrently, and meet production requirements and deadlines.
  • Ability to solve problems creatively and foster a collaborative work environment.
  • Familiarity with multiple lighting consoles is preferred.
  • Familiarity with various lighting instruments and lighting network protocols, including DMX, Art-Net, sACN, ETCNet1, Net2, Net3, is preferred.
  • Experience programming and operating special effects equipment, including fog and haze machines.
  • Basic rigging knowledge.
  • Experience supervising stagehands.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
