Job summary

The City of Wilmington, NC is seeking a skilled Light Equipment and Auto Mechanic to maintain and repair City vehicles, from police SUVs to light trucks. You’ll perform preventive maintenance, diagnose complex issues, and support a busy shop with a collaborative team.

Candidates should have 3+ years of relevant experience, ASE certification or ability to obtain, and CDL Class B plus NC licensing within designated timelines. A strong commitment to safety and reliability is essential.

Qualifications

• Six-months to one year of advanced study or training beyond high school or GED
• Experience in preventive maintenance and repair of light vehicles preferred
• Must meet licensing/certification requirements or obtain within specified timeframes

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive maintenance including oil changes, filter replacements, fluid checks, and tire services.
• Diagnose and repair brakes, engines, transmissions, drivelines, steering, suspension, and electrical systems.
• Conduct safety inspections of emergency and safety equipment and ensure vehicles meet standards.
• Complete roadside service calls for City vehicles as needed.
• Assist with shop organization and upkeep, including cleaning and tool area maintenance.
• Pick up parts and assist with vehicle preparation for surplus.
