Job summary

Crossroads-School-For-Arts- in Santa Monica seeks a certified lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor to lead private and small group swim lessons. You will ensure swimmer safety through vigilant supervision and rule enforcement, and you may be called to assist in rescue operations during emergencies.

Ideal candidates hold Red Cross Lifeguard and WSI certifications, with at least one year of lifeguard or coaching experience, and are able to pass a background check.

Qualifications

• Red Cross Lifeguard certification required.
• Water Safety Instructor certification or equivalent.
• At least 1 year lifeguard or swim coaching experience.

Responsibilities

• Lead private swim lessons as well as small group lessons.
• Prevent injuries by surveillance and enforcing pool rules.
• Act as part of the rescue team during emergencies.
• Attend at least one in-service training per year.

Job description

Work Hours: Varies throughout the year/season with varied morning, mid day and evening shifts available on weekdays and weekends.Essential Job Functions:Have the ability to confidently lead private swim lessons as well as small group lessonsPrevents injury by conducting proper surveillance and enforcing pool rulesAct as part of the rescue team in the event of any emergency while on duty at the aquatic facilityMust attend at least one in-service training per yearCore CompetenciesThe following list represents the core competencies needed for success in this position.Patience and respect when communicating with young children and their parentsThe ability to maintain emotional stability and self-controlUnderstanding of how to create appropriate swim lessons for various skill levels and ages as per Red Cross WSI standardsThe ability to correctly identify a student’s skill level and conduct a lesson that follows meaningful progressionsThe ability to correct dangerous or forbidden behavior while maintaining a respectful tone with patronsThe ability to fill out incident reports in the case of an injury while on dutyUnderstanding the facilities EAP and being prepared to use itMaintain a current Red Cross Lifeguard Certification throughout employmentThe ideal candidate will have at least one year of lifeguard experienceMaintain a current Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification or equivalentThe ideal candidate will have at least one year of swim coaching or teaching experienceMust be at least 17 years of ageMust be able to pass a background check or secure a work permit if still in high schoolPhysical Demands:Must have the ability to swim 500 yards in 10 minutes, 30 seconds.Must be able to tread water for 2 minutes without use of arms.Must be able to assist in removing a victim from the water using a backboard.
