Job description

Lifeguard (Summer 2026)

Location: Alpine

Department: Recreational Sports

Salary: $12 per hour

Qualifications
  1. Leadership, public relations, and decision‑making skills.
  2. Knowledge and application of lifeguard surveillance and rescue techniques.
  3. Current First Aid, CPR, and Lifeguard certification.
Preferred
  1. Deal courteously and consistently with all individuals.
  2. Require all individuals to show proper identification before entering SRSU.
  3. Complete entrance and checkout forms when necessary.
  4. Ensure that all policies and guidelines are followed by all users.
  5. Recognize and respond effectively in emergencies.
  6. Remain in the assigned activity area at all times.
  7. Check out equipment to users as needed.
  8. Inspect all equipment for damage and wear to ensure safety and report malfunctions to the Facility Assistant.
  9. Participate in regular in‑service training sessions.
  10. Exercise regularly to maintain fitness level (strength and endurance).
  11. Other duties assigned.
Primary Responsibilities

Duties as assigned, which may include office tasks, supporting the operation of facilities under prescribed procedures, running errands, or other duties required by the Director of Recreational Sports.

Swim Test

To take the training course, applicants must pass the prerequisite swim test:

  • Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using front crawl (freestyle), breaststroke, or a combination of both. Swimming on the back or side is not allowed.
  • Hold on for 2 minutes in the water using only the legs. Candidates should place hands under the armpits.
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
  • Swim 20 yards from the starting point. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.
  • Surface dive feet‑first or head‑first to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10‑pound object.
  • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to the starting point with both hands holding the object, keeping the face near the surface to allow breathing without using a ladder or steps.
