Job summary

Sul Ross State University is seeking a Graduate Assistant in Recreational Programming for the 2026–2027 academic year. The role supports administration, operations, and development of a multi‑faceted recreation program while working closely with professional staff.

Qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in recreation or a related field, CPR/First Aid certification (or certified within the first month), and enrollment in at least 6 graduate credit hours per semester.

Job description

Graduate Assistant – Recreational Programming 2026‑2027

Salary: $1,000‑1,250 monthly based on completed credit hours.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the professional staff in the administration, daily operations and development of a multi‑faceted recreation program.
  • Assist with student personnel management, special events, and various administrative duties.
  • Adhere to the Department of Recreational Programming mission, vision, and policies and procedures.
  • Promote and support departmental standards and programs.
  • Exhibit the highest commitment to student development and customer service.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Represent campus recreation and student affairs positively at meetings, collaborations, and interactions with students.
  • Take initiative, problem‑solve, and consult with direct supervisor before handling difficult situations that cannot be solved independently.
  • Collaborate effectively as part of a team, meeting deadlines.
  • Participate in program initiatives and departmental special events, committees, and other assignments.
  • Maintain affiliation with national, regional and state recreation associations.
  • Attend weekly meetings and collaborate with team members to complete tasks.
  • Work for the best interests of the students of Sul Ross and the department of recreational programming.
  • Participate in special trips and events, including overnight camping or adventure trips.
  • Help organize, support, and maintain all recreational facilities.
  • Prioritize student wellness and safety in all programs.
  • Assist with hiring, training, scheduling and evaluating student team members, interns, and practicum students.
  • Assist with managing payroll, operating budgets, reports, project coordination, program promotion and marketing, budget reporting, risk management, facility maintenance, program evaluation, and analysis.
  • Assist with overall student and program development.
  • Conduct weekly/monthly staff meetings and in‑service training as directed.
  • Assist with the development and execution of departmental special events.
  • Participate in departmental assessment efforts to continually enhance services.
  • Assist with facility supervision and operational responsibilities for all recreational programming facilities.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation, Sports Administration, Physical Education, or a related field.
  • CPR and First Aid certification; otherwise must be certified during the initial month of hire.
  • Currently enrolled in at least 6 graduate course hours per semester.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience and passion for physical fitness, recreational facilities, campus recreational programming (club sports and intramurals), outdoor and adventure programming, or marketing.
Other Information

Supervision: Reports to the Coordinators of Recreational Programs; Given student workers in Recreational Sports.
