The City of Poquoson is excited to kick off Summer 2025 and we are now hiring for a Lifeguard! This position is a seasonal (part-time) hourly opportunity with our Community Parks and Recreations Department. Applications are accepted on the City of Poquoson website, under our "Employment" section, or in-person with Poquoson's Human Resources Director (located in the City Manager's Office).
Season: Typical date range is Memorial Day to Labor Day (hours vary)
Minimum age: 16 years old
Starting Pay Rate: $15.00 hourly or higher dependent on Experience/Qualifications.
General Definition of Work:
Individual will provide a safe swimming environment; enforce rules; rescue anyone in danger of drowning; administer first aid, administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation and/or Automated External Defibrillator as needed. Serves as a primary responder for the seasonal municipal pool operation. Teaches swim lessons as scheduled and trained, and provide janitorial support to pool facility.
Qualifications Requirements: Age 16 or older, Require possession of Current lifeguard training certification from the American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR. Favorable background check.
Schedule: All employees will be expected to work hours as scheduled and must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and when required to meet operational needs and as scheduled. Schedules will be adjusted seasonally and will vary weekly based on events, facility coverage, and weather.
Essential Functions:
Conducts patron surveillance at Poquoson Municipal Pool, performs lifesaving duties as required and in accordance with training, administers CPR/First Aid and performs water rescues as needed; conducts safety inspections, water tests, and complete daily reports as needed. Respond, and deliver services as directed in the Emergency Action Plan for the facility.
Enforces pool safety standards and facility operational rules for all individuals using the facilities.
Interacts with the public and others outside the work area to obtain and provide information and assistance in a variety of circumstances; ability to interact effectively with a variety of public audiences, may have the opportunity to teach swimming lessons and receive additional training to do so. Provide customer service, cleaning of areas, and pool areas.
Availability to work the assigned shift schedule.
Completes all required reports/forms as required.
Maintains cleanliness of pools and surrounding areas. Inspects designated areas frequently to ensure cleanliness and assists in performing routine maintenance as needed.
Responds to complaints and concerns of customers and citizens in a calm, helpful manner. Seeks the assistance of other senior staff as needed in resolving citizen concerns or complaints. May assist in investigating issues
Demonstrates regular and punctual attendance.
Teaches swim lessons as required based on training. Obtain WSI certification as directed.
Other duties as assigned.
Additional Requirements:
Requires satisfactory results from a pre-employment drug screen. This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City’s current substance abuse policy
Requires an acceptable general background check to include a local and state criminal history and sex offender registry check.
This position requires the following certifications from the American Red Cross: First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, and Lifeguarding. Certification must be current.
Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort.
Some combination of climbing and balancing to include climbing ladders, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. May involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials up to 75-100 pounds or greater for victim rescue duties and patron surveillance. Must Possess good eyesight and hearing and ability to work in hot temperatures.
