Job summary

The YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas in Hampton, VA is hiring a Lifeguard to ensure the safety of all pool patrons and deliver high-quality service in a values-based environment. Under supervision, you will monitor the pool area, enforce rules, perform chemical checks, and respond immediately to emergencies in accordance with YMCA policies.

Certification requirements include YMCA lifeguard (or Red Cross) and CPR/First Aid/AED.

Qualifications

• Minimum age 15 with permit; 16 for YMCA employment.
• YMCA lifeguard certification or convert from Red Cross within 6 months.
• Certification in CPR/First Aid/AED/O2.
• Complete required trainings (NEO, Bloodborne Pathogens, CAP, Sexual Harassment) on hire and annually.
• Background check and Child Protective Services check.

Responsibilities

• Maintain vigilance and supervise the pool area at all times.
• Know and follow emergency procedures; respond immediately.
• Enforce all pool rules in a fair, polite manner.
• Perform chemical checks when not guarding and take action as needed.
• Maintain records and ensure safety equipment availability.
• Support YMCA fundraising and engage with members and staff.
• Attend staff meetings and trainings; uphold department standards.
