Job summary

The YMCA of Portsmouth in Virginia Beach is seeking a Lifeguard to maintain safe pool conditions, monitor the deck, and promote a positive, safe environment for members in line with YMCA policies and procedures.

Responsibilities include enforcing rules, responding to emergencies, conducting equipment checks, performing chemical testing, completing required reports, and supporting staff during shifts.

Qualifications

• Must have YMCA Lifeguard certification or American Red Cross Lifeguard certification.
• Current ASHI BLS, Basic First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certs (or equivalent) valid per policy.
• Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness.
• Demonstrate lifeguard skills per YMCA standards.
• Maintain all required certifications and trainings.
• Minimum age 15 with age-appropriate restrictions for 15–17 year olds.

Responsibilities

• Maintain safe swimming conditions with constant surveillance.
• Respond to emergencies immediately per YMCA procedures and complete required reports.
• Maintain positive relationships with members and staff.
• Apply safety rules and policies for pool and aquatic areas.
• Keep accurate records as required by YMCA and health codes.
• Perform equipment checks and ensure needed supplies are available.
