Job summary

YMCA Lifeguards oversee pool safety and enforce rules while engaging with members to ensure a positive experience. The role requires alertness, swift decision-making, and strong communication during emergencies and daily operations.

Lifeguards perform water testing, equipment checks, and participate in staff training. The position emphasizes safety, customer service, and teamwork across shifts.

Qualifications

• Education: minimum age 16 part-time; 18 for full-time. High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Current YMCA Lifeguard or equivalent with cross-over to YUSA Guard within 90 days.
• Active CPR for Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen certifications.

Responsibilities

• Maintain continuous surveillance of pool zones and perform immediate rescues using trained protocols.
• Enforce pool rules tactfully and maintain accurate logs as required by health departments and safety policies.
• Perform pre-shift safety checks, chemical water testing, and inspect emergency rescue gear.
• Build positive relationships with members through welcoming interactions and educational policy explanations.
• Attend mandatory staff meetings and in-service trainings; maintain readiness for emergencies.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
