Job summary

YMCA Lifeguards at Clemmons, NC ensure pool safety through vigilant surveillance, quick emergency response, and clear member communication. They maintain records, perform routine checks, and support program participants with friendly guidance and safety briefings.

Certification as CPR for the Professional Rescuer with AED, First Aid and Emergency Oxygen is required, along with a current YMCA Lifeguard or equivalent. Part-time roles require minimum age 16, full-time 18+.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 16 for part-time lifeguard positions and 18 for full-time employment.
• CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen certifications required.
• Current YMCA Lifeguard or equivalent certification.

Responsibilities

• Maintain active surveillance of the pool area and respond to emergencies per YMCA policies.
• Know and apply safety rules, policies, and guidelines for pool and aquatic areas.
• Build positive relationships with members and participants; communicate rules in a friendly, educational manner.
• Perform equipment checks, chemical testing when not guarding, and maintain required records.
• Attend staff meetings and in-service training.

Job description

Lifeguards are problem solvers, communicators, and customer service representatives. Being able to make quick decisions and enforce them tactfully is a key part of being a successful lifeguard.While ensuring safety is the primary duty, Lifeguards are also responsible for building relationships with members and program participants by waving and speaking briefly as they enter the pool, explaining rules as needed in a friendly and educational manner and working with the Y team to be consistent across all shifts.Essential FunctionsMaintains active surveillance of the pool area.Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the “safe-in-six” model. Completes related reports as required.Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff.Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.Performs chemical testing when not guarding , as required, and takes appropriate action.Attends all staff meetings and in-service training.Minimum age of 16 for part-time lifeguard positions; minimum age 18 for full-time employment.Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen. Current YMCA Lifeguard or equivalent. Employees need to cross-over to YUSA Guard within 90 days of employment.Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.Physical Demands:Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.
