Job description

This class is responsible for assisting in operating and maintaining municipal aquatic facilities while maintaining a healthy and safe environment for public use. Assist in supervising all lifeguard duties and assist senior lifeguard, aquatic facility operators, and senior-level recreation supervisory staff with other work-related tasks.
  1. Serves as a lifeguard and professional rescuer whose primary function is to maintain the health and safety of all users of the facilities and all employees.
  2. Enforces rules, regulations, and policies for all guests, groups, and organizations.
  3. Inspects the facility daily and reports unsafe conditions and equipment to the aquatic supervisor and aquatic facility operator.
  4. Works as a front desk representative and assists patrons with entrance to the facility, program registration, and other general customer service functions.
  5. Demonstrates basic care, upkeep, and preventative maintenance of the aquatic facilities (rescue equipment, pump room procedures, pool deck equipment, etc.) under the direction of the Aquatic Facility Operator and aquatic supervisor staff.
  6. Maintains the cleanliness and facility safety of aquatic sites.
  7. Assists the senior lifeguard in supervising the operational duties of aquatics staff at respective sites.
  8. Assists senior lifeguard in administrative duties such as daily updates of operational logs, reports, and statistical record keeping.
  9. May be required to work overtime, or alternate hours, as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
  10. Position is designated as Mission Critical by Department Director.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Serves as a CPR instructor, Lifeguard Instructor, swim lesson instructor, and/or assists the instructor trainer as needed.
  2. Required to attend monthly in-service training.
  3. Performs professional rescuer duties, including CPR, First Aid and Advanced rescues.
  4. Assists in the creation and delivery of programs offered to guests.
  5. Assists in working on special events such as swim meets and dive-movies.
  6. Assists in public relations.
  7. Performs related work as required to benefit the aquatic operations, Parks and Recreation Division, or the City of Lakeland.
  1. A high school diploma from an accredited school or a GED.
  2. Minimum of one season or three months of lifeguard experience.
  3. Current and valid American Red Cross Lifeguard/CPR/AED and First Aid certification or equivalent.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  1. American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor and/or American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor preferred but not required.
  2. Must maintain a valid telephone number.
  3. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  4. Must pass physical examination, drug and alcohol related exams and pass all legal background checks as required by the City of Lakeland.
  5. Must possess transportation for multi-work site schedule.
  6. Must be available for all shifts (early morning, late evening, weekend, holiday).
  7. May be required to pass an elevated background check provided by the City of Lakeland Police Department upon hire.
  1. Knowledge of various rescue methods, professional rescue standards, and advanced first aid in the water and surrounding areas.
  2. Ability to maintain the physical fitness readiness to lifeguard and respond to emergencies.
  3. Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  4. Basic knowledge of cash handling procedures.
  5. Basic knowledge of the care, upkeep, and preventative maintenance of aquatic facilities.
  6. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, subordinates, City employees, and the public.
  7. Ability to use sound, critical thinking skills to ensure proper operational effectiveness.
  8. Ability to use professional maturity to supervise staff, communicate with patrons and other aquatic constituents, and react to emergency situations.
  9. Ability to use problem-solving abilities and flexible work dynamics to meet the needs of the work environment.
  10. Ability to demonstrate professional workplace habits such as punctuality, effective communication, and professional lifeguard skills consistently.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Required to swim daily along with practicing lifeguard rescues and life-saving skills.
  2. Requires moderate physical work that involves walking or standing some of the time, exerting up to 100 pounds of force regularly.
  3. Requires bending, reaching, twisting, and lifting in daily operations such as cleaning, event set up, and emergency situations.
  4. The job risks exposure to bright/dim light, chemicals, blood borne pathogen, and environmental hazards.
  5. The job requires normal visual acuity, field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception.
