Job summary

Louisville Metro Government is seeking a vigilant lifeguard to monitor a swimming pool and maintain a safe, sanitary environment. The role requires close supervision under established procedures and readiness to respond to emergencies.

Responsibilities include scanning for hazards, enforcing rules, performing rescues, giving first aid, and logging pool chemical data. The position also supports facility operations and cleaning tasks as needed.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 15 years old.
• Must be certified as a Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR by a recognized organization.
• Must have physical ability to swim and perform water rescues.
• Lifeguard certificate must be onsite for inspection.
• Must submit to pre-employment and random drug screenings.

• Rescues swimmers in danger of drowning.
• Examines injured persons, administers first aid, and monitors vital signs.

• Conducts pool inspections and logs chemical levels; reports issues.
• Assists with facility operations and daily cleaning tasks.
• Performs related work as assigned.

Description

Summary Objective

The purpose of this position is to monitor swimming pools to ensure a safe and sanitary environment.

This class works under close supervision according to set procedures.

Examples of Duties

Essential Functions

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

• Actively scans the pool area, observing swimmers for signs of distress or hazardous situations to prevent accidents and to provide assistance
• Cautions swimmers regarding inclement weather, unsafe areas, or illegal conduct
• Rescues swimmers in danger of drowning
• Examines injured persons, administers first aid, monitors vital signs, applies antiseptics, and bandages, and administers artificial respiration to revive individuals
• Ensure that all pool rules and regulations are followed, including those related to safety, behavior, and age restrictions
• Conducts pool inspections, completes pool chemical logs, and reports imbalances or concerns to the supervisor
• Assists with facility operations, reports maintenance needs and ensures facility cleanliness by completing daily cleaning assignments
• Performs related work as assigned

• Must be at least 15 years old
• Must be certified as a Lifeguard, First Aid, and Adult, Child and Infant CPR by the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or YMCA
• Must possess the physical ability to swim, perform water rescues, lift individuals, and remain alert while standing or walking for extended periods
• Must keep lifeguard certificate of competency onsite and available for inspection upon request by authorities
• Must submit to pre-employment and random drug screenings

Physical Demands

• Spends prolonged periods of time sitting, standing, and walking and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations
• Spends prolonged periods of time exposed to the elements

• Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
  • Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen
  • Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions
