Job summary

A local community organization in Virginia Beach is seeking a certified Lifeguard to ensure safety in aquatic areas. Applicants must hold relevant lifeguarding certifications and maintain a high level of physical readiness. Responsibilities include surveillance, emergency response, and performing maintenance duties to create a safe environment for all members. Must be at least 15 years old and willing to submit to background checks.

Qualifications

• Must maintain a certification-level of physical and mental readiness.

Responsibilities

• Maintain safe swimming conditions and constant surveillance.
• Respond to emergency situations immediately.

• Keeps accurate records as required by YMCA and state code
• Performs equipment checks and ensures necessary equipment is available
• Checks the pool for hazards when arriving

• Attends staff meetings and training
• Adheres to YMCA policies, procedures and rules

Description

The Lifeguard maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. They create a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

1. Maintains safe swimming conditions and constant surveillance of the pools with water depths listed on the certification
2. Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required
3. Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff
4. Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area
5. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code
6. Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed
7. Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving
8. Performs chemical testing at appropriate times of the day, as required, and takes appropriate action
9. Performs all maintenance and cleaning duties as assigned
10. Attends all staff meetings and training as required
11. Adheres to all YMCA of South Hampton Roads policies, procedures, rules, regulations and best practices
12. Performs and adheres to safety, cleanliness, and uniform standards associated
13. Assist in all areas as assigned and completes all projects and assignments as assigned by supervisor

Requirements

1. YMCA Lifeguard or American Red Cross Lifeguard certification
2. Current ASHI BLS, Basic First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certification (or equivalent course from American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or National Safety Council). Any BLS certification is only good for one year
3. Ability to maintain a certification-level of physical and mental readiness
4. Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards
5. Maintain all required certifications and trainings
6. Minimum age of 15. Guidelines must be followed regarding lifeguards aged 15-17 years working in the pool area.

BACKGROUND CHECKS

An offer of employment is contingent upon receipt of satisfactory results to meet the minimum requirements of the position.
