Job summary

YMCA of South Hampton Roads is seeking a part-time Lifeguard to maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. You will promote a positive, safe environment for members in line with YMCA policies and procedures.

The role requires current Lifeguard certification (YMCA/ARC), BLS/First Aid, and the ability to maintain a high level of physical readiness. You will work with a dedicated team to ensure member safety and engagement during open swim and programs.

Qualifications

• YMCA Lifeguard certification or ARC Lifeguard certification required.
• Current BLS/First Aid and Oxygen Administration certifications or equivalents required; BLS valid for one year.
• Minimum age of 16 years; guidelines for 16–17 lifeguards apply.

Responsibilities

• Maintain safe swimming conditions with constant surveillance.
• Know and apply emergency procedures; report incidents.
• Maintain positive relationships with members and staff.
• Ensure pool safety rules and policies are followed.
• Keep accurate records as required by YMCA and Health Department.
• Perform equipment checks and maintain available equipment.
• Conduct chemical testing and take action when needed.
• Complete maintenance and cleaning duties as assigned.
• Attend staff meetings and training.
• Adhere to YMCA policies and safety standards.
• Assist in all areas as assigned by supervisor.

Position Summary

The Lifeguard maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. They create a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Essential Functions

• Maintains safe swimming conditions and constant surveillance of the pools with water depths listed on the certification
• Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required
• Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff
• Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area
• Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code
• Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed
• Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving
• Performs chemical testing at appropriate times of the day, as required, and takes appropriate action
• Performs all maintenance and cleaning duties as assigned
• Attends all staff meetings and training as required
• Adheres to all YMCA of South Hampton Roads policies, procedures, rules, regulations and best practices
• Performs and adheres to safety, cleanliness, and uniform standards associated
• Assist in all areas as assigned and completes all projects and assignments as assigned by supervisor

Qualifications

• YMCA Lifeguard or American Red Cross Lifeguard certification
• Current ASHI BLS, Basic First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certification (or equivalent course from American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or National Safety Council). Any BLS certification is only good for one year
• Ability to maintain a certification-level of physical and mental readiness
• Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards
• Maintain all required certifications and trainings
• Minimum age of 16. Guidelines must be followed regarding lifeguards aged 16-17 years working in the pool area.

Working Conditions And Physical Requirements

This position operates in an aquatic, recreational, and community-based environment and regularly interacts with participants, children, families, team members, leaders, and other stakeholders. The role requires the ability to instruct and observe participants while demonstrating proper swimming and stroke techniques. The employee must be able to stand for prolonged periods, lift and move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, and lift or assist a small to average-sized child as needed. The position requires the physical ability to safely demonstrate aquatic skills and perform the essential functions associated with teaching swim lessons. Work may be performed indoors or outdoors and may involve exposure to humidity, heat, cold, and inclement weather conditions. The role also requires the ability to maintain attention and communicate effectively in a loud and active aquatic environment.

Accountability

Employment is contingent upon satisfactory performance and successful completion and maintenance of applicable position requirements, which may include background screening, driver's license review, CPS screening, drug and/or alcohol testing, or other screenings as required by the position or applicable law.

Compensation

Wage: $13.50 hourly

The wage range provided reflects the YMCA of South Hampton Roads' good-faith determination of the minimum and maximum starting salary for this position.
