Job summary

Channel Islands YMCA in Ventura, CA is seeking an entry-level Lifeguard for part-time work at the Ventura Family YMCA. The role involves water surveillance, assisting swimmers in distress, and supporting aquatic programs while ensuring member safety.

Applicants must be at least 16, able to obtain clearance if over 18, and pass YMCA swim and written tests. Certifications must be maintained within 60 days of hire, with rapid completion of branch trainings.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 16 years old.
• Ability to obtain a criminal record clearance if over 18.
• High School Diploma or equivalent; valid work permit required if a minor.
• Must pass YMCA swim test and entry written test.
• Basic Lifeguarding certification from YMCA/USLA/StarGuard/etc.; Red Cross transfer within 90 days.
• Complete required certifications within 60 days of hire.
• Complete all branch and position trainings within two weeks of hire.

Responsibilities

• Maintain constant surveillance of water and pool deck areas.
• Assist swimmers in distress.
• Provide emergency medical assistance as trained to any person on the YMCA premise as necessary.
• Support swim lessons and aquatic program instructors.
• Take and record chemical readings as set forth by the branch.
• Know and operate pool equipment as required (lane lines, chair lift).
• Enforce and educate members about aquatic rules and procedures set forth by the branch.
• Provide excellent customer service and foster connections with members.
• Participate in in-service trainings and commit to ongoing learning.

What does a Lifeguard do?

• Maintain constant surveillance of water and pool deck areas by 10-10 scanning
• Assist swimmers in distress
• Provide emergency medical assistance as trained to any person on the YMCA premise as Necessary
• Provide support to swim lessons and aquatic programs instructors
• Take and record chemical readings set forth by branch
• Know and operate pool equipment as required (i.e. lane lines, chair lift)
• Enforce and educate members about aquatic rules and procedures set forth by branch
• Provides exceptional customer service and fosters connections with members
• Participating and satisfactory completion of in-service trainings

• Must be able to complete YMCA swim test and pass entry written test
• Possess a basic-level Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) certification from one of the following organizations: Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard, YMCA, Ellis & Associates International Lifeguard Training Program, Boy Scouts of America (BSA), StarGuard ELITE, United States Lifesaving Association (USLA). Ability to transition to Red Cross certification within 90 days
• Complete required certifications within 60 days of hire
• Complete all required Branch and Position specific trainings as required within two weeks of hire
