Job summary

Channel Islands YMCA is seeking an entry-level Lifeguard for Camarillo Family YMCA, CA. The role requires water safety vigilance, injury response, swim‑test completion, and good customer service.

You will work a part-time schedule with an hourly wage of $18.04–$18.50 and access to a YMCA gym membership, education assistance, and retirement benefits. Training and certifications must be maintained per branch guidelines.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 16 years old.
• Ability to obtain a criminal record clearance, if over 18 years of age.
• High School Diploma or equivalent; valid work permit required if a minor.
• Previous work experience preferred.
• Must be able to complete YMCA swim test and pass entry written test.
• Possess a basic-level Lifeguarding certification from one of the listed organizations; ability to transition to Red Cross certification within 90 days.
• Complete required certifications within 60 days of hire.
• Complete all required Branch and Position specific trainings as required within two weeks of hire.

Responsibilities

• Maintain constant surveillance of water and pool deck areas by 10-10 scanning.
• Assist swimmers in distress.
• Provide emergency medical assistance as trained to any person on the YMCA premise as necessary.
• Provide support to swim lessons and aquatic programs instructors.
• Take and record chemical readings set forth by branch.
• Know and operate pool equipment as required (lane lines, chair lift).
• Enforce and educate members about aquatic rules and procedures set forth by branch.
• Provide exceptional customer service and foster connections with members.
• Participate in and satisfactorily complete in-service trainings.

What does a Lifeguard do?
