Job summary

Ocean County YMCA in Toms River, NJ is seeking an Entry Level Lifeguard for a part-time role. You will monitor the pool area, enforce safety rules, and support daily operations to keep swimmers safe. The job requires current CPR/First Aid/AED certifications and a willingness to stay alert and ready for duty.

Responsibilities include enforcing policies, attending trainings, completing reports, and maintaining pool cleanliness and chemical records in accordance with YMCA standards.

Qualifications

• Must hold CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications and be able to respond to emergencies quickly.
• Willingness to remain on pool duty, monitor safety, and maintain cleanliness and records.

Responsibilities

• Maintains active surveillance of the pool area and stays on duty until relieved.
• Reviews safety rules and emergency procedures with members and rentals, reporting as required.
• Arrives in lifeguard attire and maintains readiness for duty.
• Attends mandatory trainings and state Health Department-compliant in-service sessions.
• Checks pool and deck for hazards and ensures equipment is available.
• Performs chemical testing and documents readings per YMCA/state codes.
• Maintains positive relationships with members and staff.

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading non‑profit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, on the pool deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

• Maintains active surveillance of the pool area and remains on duty and in an alert state until properly relieved from duty.
• Knows, reviews, implements, and discusses all safety rules, policies, and emergency procedures with all members and rentals. Responds to emergency or unsafe situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and completes related reports as required.
• Arrives at your designated location at scheduled time, dressed appropriately in lifeguard attire (lifeguard shirt, bathing suit, easily removed footwear, water bottle, and sunscreen).
• Completes mandatory staff trainings and attends all staff meetings (in‑person & online). Attends monthly in‑service trainings in accordance with YMCA standards, and the state Health Department Code.
• Checks pool, pool deck, and equipment for hazardous conditions upon arrival and departure, and maintains cleanliness. Ensures that all appropriate equipment and supplies are available as needed.
• Performs chemical testing when not actively guarding and maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and the state Health Department code. Reports any discrepancies with chemical readings to immediate supervisor.
• Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants, and other staff.

• Oxygen Administration certification

Requirements

• Minimum age of 15 (Age 16 preferred)
• Certifications: Current YMCA, American Red Cross, or equivalent, CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications
• Ability to maintain physical and mental readiness.
• Must be willing and able to remain and clean the pool area.
