This position supports the work of the Y, a leading non‑profit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, on the pool deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Maintain active surveillance of the pool area and remain on duty and in an alert state until properly relieved.
- Know, review, implement, and discuss all safety rules, policies, and emergency procedures with all members and rentals. Respond to emergency or unsafe situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and complete related reports as required.
- Arrive at your designated location at scheduled time, dressed appropriately, and in appropriate lifeguard attire (lifeguard shirt, bathing suit, easily removed footwear, water bottle, and sunscreen).
- Adhere to all program and CDC standards including safety and cleanliness; sanitize areas prior to use and after use; assist in maintaining equipment and supplies, and return to proper storage spaces after each usage.
- Complete mandatory staff trainings and attend all staff meetings (in‑person & online). Attend monthly in‑service trainings in accordance with YMCA standards and the state Health Department Code.
- Check pool, pool deck, and equipment for hazardous conditions upon arrival and departure, and maintain cleanliness. Ensure that all appropriate equipment and supplies are available as needed.
- Adhere to policies related to boundaries with youth. Complete required abuse risk management training. Follow mandated abuse reporting procedures, including reporting suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
- Perform chemical testing when not actively guarding and maintain accurate records as required by the YMCA and the state Health Department code. Report any discrepancies with chemical readings to immediate supervisor.
- Maintain effective, positive relationships with the members, participants, and other staff.
Qualifications
- Minimum age of 15.
- Certifications: Current YMCA, American Red Cross, or equivalent accepted by the Bathing Code Lifeguard, CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications.
- Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
- Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness.
