A Lifeguard is a trained and certified safety professional responsible for ensuring the safety and protection of people in and around an aquatic environment. In this role, you will ensure the safety of all users through continuous surveillance of the aquatic area. You will enforce aquatic guidelines to maintain a safe environment and be prepared to implement the Emergency Action Plan when necessary. Join our pack!
Contribute
- Safety and Surveillance: Ensure the safety of users through continuous surveillance.
- Facility Inspection & Maintenance: Inspect the facility, perform preventative maintenance and report any unsafe conditions or equipment failures.
- Chemical Testing: Perform regular water chemistry tests and accurately log the readings to maintain water quality and compliance.
- Event Operations: Assist with the setup and teardown of equipment for various aquatic programs, special events and open recreation activities.
- Certification and Fitness: Maintain an up-to-date American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification and preserve the required fitness level (swimming skills, strength and endurance) necessary to effectively respond to all aquatic emergencies.
- Cleanliness: Maintain a clean and inviting aquatic environment.
- Attend: non-revenue generating sporting events for free.

Other Work/Responsibilities
- Guideline Enforcement: Understand and enforce Wellness and Recreation and area specific guidelines.
- Risk Management: Knowledge and implementation of emergency action plan.
- Training and Meetings: Attend required training and monthly staff meetings.
- Community: Develop professional relationships with co-workers, participants and guests.
- Support: Perform other related duties to support the overall functioning of the department.
- Certification: Must possess and maintain a current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification.
Working Conditions
- Environment: Indoors in a non-air-conditioned space.
- Physical: Frequent standing, sitting, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting weight up to 40 lbs regularly. During an emergency a lifeguard must possess the physical ability to perform immediate, strenuous and sustained effort for the rescue or extraction of a victim of unknown weight.
- Sensory: Potentially loud and busy work environment that requires strong communication and observation skills.
- Schedule: Flexibility in availability is needed to potentially work early mornings, late nights, weekends, and breaks.
- Safety: Exposure to potential safety hazards and adherence to the emergency action plan to mitigate risk.

Required License or Certification
- Eligibility: Current full-time NC State student, demonstrated by enrollment in at least 12 undergraduate or 9 graduate credit hours.
- Certifications: Current or ability to obtain American Red Cross Lifeguarding and First Aid certification before position commencement.
- American Red Cross In Water Testing:
- Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest:
- Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed.)
- Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
- Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
- Complete a timed event within 1 minute and 40 seconds:
- Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.) Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 – 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
- Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out at or near the surface. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
