Job summary

Ladera Recreation District in Portola Valley, CA is seeking a part-time Lifeguard to supervise pool activities, enforce rules, and maintain safety in the facility.

Role Description

This is a part-time, on-site Lifeguard role located in Portola Valley, CA. The Lifeguard is responsible for supervising swimmers, monitoring pool and deck areas, and enforcing safety rules and facility policies. Day-to-day tasks include preventing and responding to emergencies, performing water rescues, administering first aid and CPR when needed, and maintaining a vigilant watch over all pool activities. The role also involves conducting regular safety checks of equipment and facilities, assisting with set-up and clean-up for swim programs, and providing courteous customer service to pool users. Lifeguards collaborate with other staff to ensure a clean, orderly environment and a positive experience for all visitors.

Qualifications

• Current lifeguard certification from a recognized organization (e.g., Red Cross or equivalent), including CPR, AED, and First Aid.
• Strong swimming skills and the ability to perform water rescues and respond calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
• Attention to detail and situational awareness to monitor swimmers, recognize potential hazards, and enforce safety rules consistently.
• Clear, professional communication skills and the ability to interact respectfully with community members of all ages.
• Dependable, punctual, and able to work a part-time schedule that may include weekends, holidays, and peak seasonal hours.
• Ability to stand, walk, and remain outdoors for extended periods; capable of lifting and moving equipment as needed.
• Prior experience working at pools, camps, or recreation facilities is preferred but not required.
• Minimum age and any local or state requirements for lifeguards must be met; background checks may be conducted in accordance with applicable law.
