Job summary

YMCA of Portsmouth seeks a part-time Lifeguard to maintain safe swimming conditions, monitor pool and deck areas, and support members with a positive, safety-focused atmosphere. You will apply YMCA safety policies, perform chemical tests, and respond to emergencies in a timely manner.

Requirements include current Lifeguard certification, ASHI BLS, First Aid, and Oxygen Administration credentials. Applicants must meet age guidelines and participate in scheduled trainings to stay current.

Qualifications

• Must hold current Lifeguard certification.
• BLS, Basic First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certifications required.
• Maintain certification readiness and lifeguard skills.
• Ages 15+ with rules for 15–17 year olds in pool area.

Responsibilities

• Maintain safe swimming conditions with constant surveillance.
• Follow emergency procedures and complete required reports.
• Foster positive relations with members and staff.
• Apply pool safety rules and health compliance standards.
• Maintain accurate records as required by YMCA and health codes.
• Perform equipment checks and ensure supplies are available.
• Check for hazardous conditions upon arrival and test chemicals.
• Attend required staff meetings and trainings.

Job description

Description

The Lifeguard maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. They create a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

• Maintains safe swimming conditions and constant surveillance of the pools with water depths listed on the certification
• Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required
• Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff
• Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area
• Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code
• Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed
• Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving
• Performs chemical testing at appropriate times of the day, as required, and takes appropriate action
• Performs all maintenance and cleaning duties as assigned
• Attends all staff meetings and training as required
• Adheres to all YMCA of South Hampton Roads policies, procedures, rules, regulations and best practices
• Performs and adheres to safety, cleanliness, and uniform standards associated
• Assist in all areas as assigned and completes all projects and assignments as assigned by supervisor

Requirements

• YMCA Lifeguard or American Red Cross Lifeguard certification
• Current ASHI BLS, Basic First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certification (or equivalent course from American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or National Safety Council). Any BLS certification is only good for one year
• Ability to maintain a certification-level of physical and mental readiness
• Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards
• Maintain all required certifications and trainings
• Minimum age of 15. Guidelines must be followed regarding lifeguards aged 15-17 years working in the pool area.

Background Checks

An offer of employment is contingent upon receipt of satisfactory results to meet the minimum requirements of the position. They may include criminal background and reference checks, E-Verify, drug test, driver's license record, and/or a Child Protective Services Check (CPS). Additional driver's license check, CPS, criminal background check, alcohol, and/or drug testing may be required to be processed in the future in order to meet and/or maintain the requirements of this position.
