Compensation
Lifeguard: $16.96 - $20.62 per hour. New rate of $25.00 per hour pending City Council approval.

The Position

Under general supervision, the Lifeguard will ensure safe use of the pool and aquatic facilities and the general safety of patrons; supervise conduct of pool patrons; enforce swimming pool rules; respond to emergencies as required; administer First Aid and CPR, and perform lifesaving activities. The incumbent will maintain and operate materials and equipment safely, maintain accurate files and records, and perform related duties as assigned.

This is a non-benefited, at-will part-time position with working hours assigned at the discretion of the Recreation Department, limited up to 960 hours per fiscal year. Employees may be assigned to work on weekends, evenings and holidays.

Examples of Duties
  • Observe and assess swimmers in the pool area from an assigned station to identify and prevent unsafe conditions or hazards.
  • Enforce facility rules regarding use of the pool, restrooms, and general public area.
  • Rescue swimmers in danger of drowning; administer first aid and emergency care when needed.
  • Perform general pool and facility maintenance each day, including opening and closing procedures.
  • Determine and record chlorine and pH values of water; monitor and record water temperatures.
  • Prepare and maintain records and reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of lifeguarding safety policies, water hazards, lifesaving techniques and first aid.
  • Knowledge of standard pool operating procedures.
  • Ability to actively perform safety duties and safeguard individuals, the public and property.
  • Ability to interact effectively with City staff, volunteers and the public; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Ability to recognize hazardous situations; respond to emergency details.
  • Ability to assist with daily maintenance of the pool facility.
  • Ability to prepare written reports and records.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Experience / Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be at least 16 years of age at time of appointment.
  • Work Permit if still enrolled in high school.
Certifications

Physical Demands

This position requires sitting, standing, walking, swimming for prolonged periods, hearing and speaking clearly, and normal or corrected vision. Other physical demands include bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 50 pounds, manual dexterity to operate pool equipment, and maintaining calm mental focus during emergencies.

Work Environment

Work occurs at an outside aquatics facility in seasonal climate and weather conditions. The environment may involve slippery surfaces, water and pool chemicals, and potential emergencies. Exposure to chemicals used in pool operations and to body fluids with the possibility of communicable disease may occur.
