Job summary

Annual Salary: $31,924 - $47,886

Job Summary

Under general supervision, this position performs skilled lifeguarding duties to ensure the safety of patrons at aquatic facilities. The Lifeguard I monitors activities, enforces safety rules, and responds to emergencies while developing skills and experience in aquatic safety and facility operations. This position represents the full performance level of the lifeguard classification and is expected to work independently while maintaining a high level of vigilance and safety awareness.

Typical Duties
Lifeguarding & Safety Enforcement
  • Monitors aquatic areas to ensure the safety of patrons
  • Enforces facility rules and regulations to prevent unsafe behavior
  • Identifies hazardous conditions and takes corrective action
  • Maintains constant vigilance and awareness of surroundings
Emergency Response
  • Responds to water rescues, medical emergencies, and incidents
  • Performs CPR, First Aid, AED use, and other emergency procedures
  • Assists with emergency response efforts as directed
  • Completes required incident documentation
Operational Support
  • Assists with opening and closing procedures for aquatic facilities
  • Monitors facility conditions and reports maintenance or safety issues
  • Supports daily operations to ensure safe and efficient service delivery
Facility Monitoring & Maintenance Support
  • Assists in maintaining cleanliness and safety of facility
  • Performs basic cleaning and upkeep tasks
  • Reports issues related to water quality, equipment, or facility conditions
Customer Service & Public Interaction
  • Provides assistance and information to patrons
  • Maintains a professional and courteous demeanor
  • Refers complex issues to higher-level staff
Other Duties
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum age requirement as established by City policy.
Licenses & Certifications
  • Lifeguard certification required (or ability to obtain upon hire per City policy).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:
  • Lifeguarding techniques and water rescue procedures
  • Emergency response protocols
  • Aquatic safety rules and regulations
Skills in:
  • Monitoring and enforcing safety procedures

Physical Requirements

Work involves standing, walking, swimming, and performing physically demanding rescue activities.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in aquatic environments with exposure to water, chemicals, noise, and public interaction. Requires continuous attention to safety and readiness to respond to emergencies. Position is safety sensitive and subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Clovis policies.
