Responsibilities

  • Perform as a lifeguard by observing patrons on the deck and in the water to ensure safety and prevent accidents.
  • Reports and treats all patron and pool problems to the Aquatics & Safety Manager and in their absence, the Building Management.
  • Follows procedures according to the USU/SRWC established Swimming Pool Guidelines and properly files and records safety violations to Aquatics & Safety Manager when applicable.
  • Provides First Aid, CPR pool rescue skills to patrons in pool and at the SRWC, when necessary.
  • Answers patrons' questions, addresses concerns, and provides information.
  • Properly open and close the pool and sand volleyball court area and set up and break down all necessary equipment.
  • Keeps pool and pool deck clean on a daily basis.
  • Vacuum the pool each shift as needed.
  • In the event of an emergency, administer basic first aid for minor injuries and contact a parent or responsible adult for the injured person(s) if necessary; for major injury, respond with appropriate training and follow USU/SRWC guidelines.
  • Maintains a daily log for tasks and chemical checks.
  • Perform all other assigned duties as requested by the lead staff and/or supervisor.
  • Attend all mandatory staff meetings and in-service trainings.
  • Other duties as assigned, reasonably within the scope of the job.

GENERAL STATEMENT

Under the supervision of the Aquatics & Safety Manager, lifeguards are responsible for providing lifeguard services at the swimming pool facility. They explain and enforce safety rules, respond to user inquiries, and administer first aid and CPR. They are also responsible for reporting and filing safety violations to the Aquatics & Safety Manager when applicable.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Perform as a lifeguard by observing patrons on the deck and in the water to ensure safety and prevent accidents.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience

One year of related work experience in field required. Recreation, Kinesiology, Education, and Health Services majors are preferred, but not required. Must be a current and active CSULB student enrolled in a minimum of 6 units.

Knowledge and Abilities

Ability to perform as wide variety of swimming skills; possess sufficient strength, agility, hearing, and vision to perform the duties of a lifeguard; thoroughly understand the procedures for reporting accidents and know procedures for when and how to call for help to handle stressful or sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, specifically the general public, staff employees and students; arrive for work on time; follow directions from supervisor; understand and follow work rules, safety procedures and personnel policies.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations

Current Lifeguard Training Certification and CPR/First Aid/AED certification required.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Schedule

This position is an annual, year-round position that works through the winter & summer academic breaks. The work schedule generally follows SRWC business hours. Shift schedule is to be determined based on departmental needs and will include evenings and weekends. Scheduled hours may fluctuate depending on departmental needs.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include peripheral and close vision, the ability to see at 20 feet or more, and the ability to adjust focus. Must meet physical requirements for a lifeguard; administer first aid or cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation in emergencies, and possess strong swimming abilities.

1. The work environment is generally 20% indoors in a temperature-controlled office and 80% outdoors in various weather conditions.
