Job summary

DeKalb Park District in DeKalb, IL is seeking a part-time Lifeguard to monitor swimming areas and prevent accidents. You will assist swimmers, enforce rules, and respond to emergencies.

Responsibilities include rescues, first aid, incident reporting, and maintaining safety standards. Must be 16 or older and able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays. CPR/AED certification is required.

Position Description

DEPARTMENT: Recreation
TITLE: Lifeguard
CLASSIFICATION: Part-Time, Non-Exempt
SUMMARY OF POSITION: Monitors activities in swimming areas to prevent accidents and provide assistance to swimmers by performing essential job duties and responsibilities.

Supervision

Reports to the Pool Manager, Aquatics Supervisor, and Hopkins Facilities and Aquatics Manager
Supervision Exercised: None

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Cautions swimmers regarding unsafe activities and enforces facility rules.
  • Rescues swimmers in danger of drowning and administers first aid.
  • Continuously scans assigned areas of responsibility and recognizes and responds to emergencies.
  • Completes incident/accident reports as required.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of all Park District and aquatic safety rules.
  • Cleans the pool deck area and locker rooms.
  • Installs or removes lane lines and starting blocks.
  • Possesses the ability to perform the physical and cognitive skills necessary to achieve and maintain a lifeguard and CPR certification as prescribed by the Park District.
  • Promptly reports any work‑related or patron injuries to supervisor.
  • Uses good safety awareness and judgement; corrects unsafe conditions and/or reports them to supervisor.
  • Manages difficult or emotional customer situations; responds to requests for service and assistance.
Peripheral Duties
  • Participates in required district training programs including lifeguard in‑service training and certification updates.
  • Supervises facility rentals.
  • Provides backup to related positions when possible.
Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • Must be 16 years of age or older.

  • Ability to perform life‑saving techniques including in‑pool rescues, CPR, AED administration and first aid under stressful conditions.
  • Well organized and strong ability to work independently as well as with others.
  • Ability to follow directions and give clear instructions.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to handle negative feedback from patrons.
  • Ability to portray a professional image of the District.
Special Requirements
  • Possesses and maintains American Red Cross lifeguard certification.
