Job summary

The Decatur Family YMCA in Decatur, IL is hiring a Lifeguard to uphold safety, enforce pool rules, and respond to emergencies.

Requires at least 16 years old; Red Cross Lifeguard with O2 and OSHA/Bloodborne pathogens, mandated reporter, and harassment training.

Work indoors, monitor pool area, maintain logs, and communicate clearly to youth and adults; schedule adherence and readiness for EAP.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Certified Lifeguard Redcross Certification with O2.
  • OSHA Blood-borne Pathogens training.
  • Mandated Reporter training.
  • Sexual Harassment and Discrimination training.

Responsibilities

  • All lifeguards must remain physically and mentally alert, taking a proactive approach to searching for distressed swimmers and hazards.
  • Successfully communicate with youth and adults to enforce rules and schedules.
  • Give clear directions in case of emergency.
  • Keep schedule availability up to date. Report for duty with proper lifeguarding uniform.
  • Activate EAP when necessary.
  • Maintain safety of pool environment by removing any hazards that could lead to injury in and around the pool and pool deck.
  • Maintain chemical logs.
  • Mandatory in-service training attendance required.
  • Lifeguards must remain physically capable of completing the prerequisite swim test as prescribed by the American Red Cross to ensure ability to respond to emergencies.

General Function

The lifeguard is responsible for upholding safety rules, Y policies, accident prevention and emergency response at YMCA pools.

Education/Experience Required
  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
Training/Certifications Required

Working Conditions
  • Works indoors in adequate workspace with adequate temperatures, ventilation and lighting.
  • Works with average exposure to noise and disruptions. Works with above average stress.
  • Normal exposure to Chlorinated environment.
  • Subject periodically to irate individuals and stressful situations.
Physical and Mental Conditions
  • Must be able to see, hear and verbally respond.
  • Required to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk, and hear.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Light to medium work, with occasional lifting/carrying of objects with weights up to 75 pounds.
  • Must be able to cope with the physical and mental stress of the position.
  • Must be able to endure long periods of work without a break.
