Job Summary
Claremont, CA – Lifeguard responsible for ensuring the safety of patrons through surveillance, accident prevention, and rescues in the water, adjacent pool areas, and the Tiernan Field House.
Responsibilities
- Supervision: enforce TFH pool policies, maintain constant supervision of patrons, and act immediately in emergencies.
- Safety & Emergency Preparedness: comply with TFH rules and California regulations; attend in‑service trainings each semester; prepare activity reports; maintain swimming skills (minimum 500‑meter swim per week); inspect pool and equipment; perform opening/closing procedures; maintain uniform and high customer‑service standards; perform maintenance duties and miscellaneous tasks as needed.
- Active Support: support the College’s Principles of Community and Institutional Values in all job duties.
Qualifications
- 1+ year lifeguarding experience preferred or equivalent education and experience.
- Current certification in Lifeguarding from the American Red Cross or equivalent.
- Current certification in CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer from the American Red Cross or equivalent.
- Current certification in First Aid from the American Red Cross or equivalent.
- Work permit required if under 18 years of age.
- Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergencies, follow instructions, communicate clearly, and act professionally at all times.
Physical Requirements
- Swim 200 yards continuously.
- Swim 20 yards using freestyle or breaststroke, surface dive 7–10feet, retrieve a 10‑pound object, and return to the surface within 1minute 40seconds.
- Tread water for 2 minutes without using hands.
- Perform a successful rescue of a simulated drowning victim with proper Red Cross protocol.
- Perform rescues involving victims weighing 50–300 pounds and tasks requiring physical strength and stamina.
- Lift, push, and pull heavy objects frequently.
- Hear sounds in a noisy environment and speak loudly to warn participants of danger.
Hours & Compensation
Temporary, part‑time, non‑benefits‑eligible positions for summer pool operations. Hours vary, may include weekends and after‑hours. Position ends on or before September1,2026. Hourly rate: $17.15.
