Job summary

Amica Mutual Insurance Co. is seeking an experienced Life Underwriter in Lincoln, NE. The role analyzes and classifies risk for life insurance applications per underwriting guidelines and collaborates with sales and medical directors as needed.

The position offers a base 37.5 hour week, competitive salary, and a comprehensive benefits package including health, vacation, holidays, and a strong 401(k) plan. Prior ALMI/ALU coursework is preferred; bachelor’s degree or equivalent is required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of experience as a life insurance underwriter required.
  • ALMI designation and ALU 101 and ALU 201 passed preferred.
  • Pursuing continuing education such as FLMI and FALU is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with effective written and verbal communication.
  • Strong technical and typing skills, including the use of Excel, Word, and Outlook.

Responsibilities

  • Review cases up to $3,000,000; with approval authority for up to $2,000,000.
  • Develop and maintain a structured schedule, with adherence to meeting/exceeding all productivity, quality, and performance standards.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and helps Sales Representatives to understand the rationale for any adverse underwriting decision.
  • Maintain positive interaction and builds relationships with all departments, through effective, timely, and professional communication.
  • Work independently but understands when to refer cases to medical director or management.
  • Responsible for coordinating facultative reinsurance review with the reinsurers.
  • Provide direct guidance and assistance to New Business to resolve underwriting requirements.
  • Understand how to analyze and assess risk with the use of an automated underwriting rules engine and third-party data requirements.
  • Continue growth and development through professional development and attending industry conferences, webinars, and other types of training meetings.
  • Provide back-up underwriting support during employee absences and peak volume periods. Overtime may be necessary.
  • May be called upon to handle other duties as required.

This position is responsible for analyzing and classifying risk for life insurance applications in accordance with established underwriting guidelines, policies, and procedures.

Position Duties and Responsibilities

Desirable Knowledge and Skills
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience preferred

  • ALMI designation and ALU 101 and ALU 201 passed preferred
  • Pursuing continuing education and professional development such as FLMI and FALU is a plus

This is a full-time position based on a 37.5 hour work week. The starting annual salary is between $77,182 - $103,235 based on level of previous experience and/or applicable licenses within the property and casualty industry. In addition, hired applicants will be eligible for the company’s annual variable incentive paid based on company performance.
