The University of Vermont is seeking a Life Safety Systems Mechanic in Burlington, Vermont. Responsibilities include inspecting safety systems such as fire extinguishers and carbon monoxide detectors, maintaining accurate records, and promoting workplace safety.
The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma and two years’ experience in fire equipment handling, along with knowledge of fire protection regulations. The position is full-time with a pay range of $25.00 - $26.50 per hour.
Responsibilities include providing inspection services to a variety of safety systems including, but not limited to: fire extinguishers, sprinkler valves, carbon monoxide detectors, safety showers, eye wash systems, egress doors, emergency exit lights, emergency phones, etc. Maintain accurate, updated records for all related equipment to keep the University in compliance with applicable codes. Issue hot work and Red Tag permits. Access information utilizing appropriate computer software programs and desktop applications. Promote a work place that encourages safety in the shop and in the field. Operate University vehicle. This position reports to a supervisor and requires active engagement in learning and practicing principles of social justice and inclusion, environmental sustainability, and delivering great customer experience.
High School Diploma and two years’ experience handling fire equipment. Knowledge of fire protection regulations such as OSHA, VOSHA, BOCA and NFPA. Experience using computers and mobile technology. Valid driver’s license and driver’s check required. Specific physical requirements may apply based on job functions. Must wear personal protective equipment (PPE) while performing specific job tasks. Initial employment contingent upon successful completion of background check and physical screening.

Probationary period may be required. Occasional evening and/or weekend work required (may result in overtime if non‑exempt). This position is ineligible for telework due to essential functions. Background check required. A post‑offer pre‑employment (POPE test) physical examination is required.
