Job summary

Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) is seeking a Life Safety Code Surveyor to assess long‑term care facilities for compliance with state and federal life safety standards. The role travels up to 80% across Texas and documents findings with professional reporting.

You will conduct surveys, write detailed reports, present findings to facility staff, and coordinate with survey teams. Strong experience in inspection, construction trades, or safety regulatory work is preferred.

Qualifications

• Experience in inspection or construction work or related field such as fire protection, safety risk management, building maintenance, engineering or architecture.
• Experience with one or more construction trades preferred.
• Professional experience in design, review, inspection or building or closely related field relating to safety codes.

Responsibilities

• Surveys facilities for compliance with federal and state life safety laws and regulations.
• Completes inspection/survey reports with deficiency findings and narrative support.
• Visits facilities to verify correction of cited violations.
• Conducts entrance and exit conferences with facility staff.
• Provides technical knowledge of NFPA Life Safety Code and applicable standards to ensure compliance.
• Coordinates with agency staff conducting surveys for certification in Medicare/Medicaid programs.
• Performs desk reviews and reviews plans of correction for compliance.
• Answers questions from providers in person and by phone.
• Supports on-call duties during emergencies or weather events.
