Job summary

Qualifications

  • Ability to respond to emergencies and follow safety procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool and surrounding areas.
  • Surveil the pool area and respond to emergencies.
  • Maintain accurate records as required by YMCA or state Health Department.
  • Maintains positive, culturally aware relationships with members and staff.
  • Performs equipment checks and ensures necessary equipment is available; conducts chemical testing when not guarding.

DESCRIPTION

This position maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Builds personal and meaningful relationships with YMCA members, participants, volunteers, and guests. While exemplifying the Y’s commitment to DEI and the four-character values of caring, honesty, respect & responsibility and responds to all members and community inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Maintains active surveillance of the pool area by continuously scanning the pool area from side to side. Regularly walking around the pool area to check blind spots, steam room, and sauna.
  • Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the “safe-in-six model” (Prevent, Recognize, Activate EAP, Rescue, Care, Report). Completes related reports as required.
  • Maintains effective, positive, and culturally aware of relationships with members, participants, and other staff.
  • Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.
  • Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  • Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action.
  • Check the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving and for the duration of the shift.
  • Lifeguards may be required to open or close the aquatics center.
  • Attending all staff meetings and in-service training.
  • Fulfills any other functions designated by the YMCA Administration.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Minimum age 18.
  • Ability to maintain certification levels of physical and mental readiness.
  • Current YMCA Lifeguard or Red Cross Lifeguard.
  • Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA/ARC standards.
  • Certifications: CPR for Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen.
  • 5+ years of Lifeguarding? is preferred.
