Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

Supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Builds members and the community’s understanding of the YMCA’s cause and impact. This position maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas, creating a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Build personal and meaningful relationships with YMCA members, participants, volunteers, and guests, while exemplifying the Y’s commitment to the four-character values of caring, honesty, respect & responsibility, and responding to all members and community inquiries in a timely manner.
2. Maintain active surveillance of the pool area by continuously scanning from side to side, regularly walking around to check blind spots, steam room, and sauna.
3. Know/review all emergency procedures and respond to emergencies immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the “safe-in-six model” (Prevent, Recognize, Activate EAP, Rescue, Care, Report); complete related reports as required.
4. Know, understand, and consistently apply safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area, and maintain accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.
5. Perform equipment checks and ensure appropriate equipment is available as needed.
6. Check the pool for hazardous conditions upon arrival and throughout the shift.
7. Attend all staff meetings and in-service training.
8. Fulfills any other functions designated by the YMCA Administration.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Minimum age 16.
2. Maintain a certification level of physical and mental readiness.
3. Current YMCA Lifeguard or Red Cross Lifeguard.
4. Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA/ARC standards.
5. Certifications: CPR for Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen.
