Job summary

South Carolina Department of Corrections is seeking a security supervisor to lead the security staff assigned to a medium/maximum security facility, ensuring inmate custody and safety.

The role oversees security across buildings and public properties, performs regular checks for safety and compliance, and coordinates inmate counts and investigations with staff. This position requires prior corrections/security leadership and state agency experience.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or higher; a bachelor's degree may substitute for the required experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC training academy and complete the basic supervisory course within six months of entry.
• Experience in correctional, security, military, or police work with supervisory responsibilities.

Job Responsibilities

• Plans, coordinates, and directs the actions of the security staff and oversees security, custody, and control of inmates in assigned unit(s) of a medium/maximum security facility.
• Assumes primary responsibility for security at Community Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, all buildings, and public property.
• Makes routine checks of assigned areas to ensure subordinate staff are performing their duties properly and safely, and that cleanliness and OSHA standards are maintained.
• Assists with all inmates counts for accuracy.
• Investigates complaints and violations; arbitrates disputes among inmate population and correctional staff.

Under general supervision,

Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements

A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor's degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.

SCDC Minimum Requirements

• A high school diploma and three (3) years' experience in correctional, security, military, or police work to include one (1) year of supervisory experience.
• A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 1 year).
• Must be certified by the SCDC training academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
