Job summary

The State of South Carolina Department of Corrections seeks a Security Supervisor for a medium security facility. You will plan, coordinate and direct security staff, overseeing inmate custody and the safety of buildings and property.

Responsibilities include routine unit checks, ensuring OSHA standards, assisting with inmate counts, and investigating complaints or disputes among inmates and staff. Requires HS diploma and 3 years in related fields, with 1 year supervisory experience.

Qualifications

• High school diploma plus 3 years in correctional/security work, with 1 year supervisory experience.
• A degree in criminal justice or related field may substitute for supervisory experience year-for-year.
• Must be certified by the SCDC training academy and complete the basic supervisory course within 6 months.
• Eight weeks of SCDC Basic Training required on hire.

Job Responsibilities

• Assumes primary responsibility for security of all buildings and public property.
• Makes routine checks of the unit(s) to ensure subordinate staff are performing their duties properly and safely, and that cleanliness and OSHA standards are maintained.
• Assists with all inmates counts for accuracy.
• Investigates complaints and violations; arbitrates disputes among inmate population and correctional staff.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:

• A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.

SCDC Minimum Requirements

• A high school diploma and three (3) years’ experience in correctional, security, military, or police work to include one (1) year of supervisory experience.
• A degree in criminal Justice or a related degree may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 1 year).
• Must be certified by the SCDC training academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.

Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.
