Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Follow AVHS policies and city/state requirements regarding animal welfare.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, volunteers, and other departments.
  • Act in accordance with Fear Free and related animal handling practices.
  • Provide daily care of animals including feeding, bathing, hygiene, exercise, and behavior support.
  • Maintain animal and facility spaces following disease control protocols (cleaning, laundry, etc.).
  • Perform examinations, health tests, vaccinations, and parasite treatments.
  • Administer anesthesia with monitoring, surgery support, and other medical treatments.
  • Administer controlled substances with oversight.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and assist with other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of and commitment to animal welfare issues.* Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening and background check.**Skills and Experience:*** Work experience as a veterinary technician or assistant. Preferred experience in a shelter or high volume spay/neuter clinic.* Ability to communicate skillfully and effectively with diverse staff, volunteers, and community in a professional, pleasant, respectful, and courteous manner.* Ability to handle and assess potentially dangerous or fractious dogs and cats.* Demonstrated ability to follow instructions, verbal and written, in repetitious tasks and one-off situations.* Demonstrated experience in working with a diverse staff in a positive, friendly, collaborative, and inclusive manner.**Computer Skills:*** Comfortable learning new systems, including online information systems and shelter software.**Physical Demands:*** Individuals will frequently be required to speak publicly; stand, walk or sit for extended periods, reach, bend or stoop, regularly lift and carry up to 50 pounds.* Able to work flexible hours, which will include weekends and some evenings.**Occupational Disclaimer:**This position works daily in animal setting.
