Job Location and System Overview

This vacancy is located in the Nursing Department of Eastern Louisiana Mental Health System in Jackson, LA. ELMHS is the largest 24-hour, multi-site, state psychiatric complex, comprising residential, outpatient, and inpatient services.

The position may be filled as either a Probational or Job Appointment (open to all qualified applicants); a promotion (open to all statewide classified and Agency-wide permanent status employees); by Detail to Special Duty; or as a part-time, temporary WAE. Current permanent classified employees may be required to accept a Probational appointment if selected. If filled as a Job Appointment, there is a possibility this position may be converted to a Probational Appointment should funding become available.

Pay and Benefits

Special Entrance Rate (SER) of Pay based on years of experience as a licensed LPN:

• LPN 2: $1,667.20 biweekly / $20.84 hourly
• LPN 3: $1,784.00 biweekly / $22.30 hourly

Premium Pay (per hour physically worked):

• $10.00 for working at ELMHS as a Specialty Unit
• $2.00 Starting Longevity Pay

Shift Differentials (per hour physically worked):

• 2nd Shift - $2.50
• 3rd Shift - $3.50
• Weekend Shift Diff - $2.00
• Weekend Shift Diff 2nd - $3.00
• Weekend Shift Diff 3rd - $4.00
• Holiday Shift Diff - $2.50
• Holiday Shift Diff 2nd - $4.00
• Holiday Shift Diff 3rd - $4.50

Position Details

This position is in a Career Progression Group and may be filled as a Practical Nurse--Licensed 2 or 3 depending on the candidate's qualifications. The maximum salary for the Practical Nurse--Licensed 3 is $68,806.00 annually. Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a current Louisiana Practical Nurse license, a temporary permit, or a multi-state license issued by a Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC/eNLC) state plus one year of experience as a licensed practical nurse.

Function of Work

To provide basic nursing care to assigned patients/clients in stable conditions and in predictable situations in accordance with the Professional Nurses Practice Act.

Level of Work

Experienced.

Supervision

Received: General supervision from a Registered Nurse or a higher-level Practical Nurse.
Exercised: Functional supervision over paraprofessional nursing personnel.

Location of Work

Statewide – health care facilities; correctional facilities.

Job Distinctions

• Differs from Practical Nurse--Licensed 1 by the presence of journeyman level duties and independent performance of duties.
• Differs from Practical Nurse--Licensed 3 by the absence of advanced journeyman and/or supervisory duties.

Duties

• Monitor and regulate infusions and transfusions.
• Initiate first aid and CPR.
• May perform oral pharyngeal suction.
• Direct routine activities and serve as a resource to paraprofessionals.
• Participate in patient care conferences.
• Check vital signs and record on patient’s record.
• Gather information about patient’s physical and mental status.
• Observe patients for changes and report findings.
• Administer medications and document.
• Apply dressings and treatments as ordered.
• Assist physicians with examinations and treatments.
• Bath, feed, and comfort patients.
• Carry out doctor’s orders that do not require specialized techniques.
• Admit and discharge patients.
• Collect samples for lab tests.
• Read and record medical test results.
• Exchange shift reports.
