Summary:
Under the direct supervision of the Clinical Manager and the general supervision of the Professional Registered Nurse, assists in caring for patients and/or families from admission to discharge, considering the aging process, throughout Brown University Health, including all developmental stages and cultural patterns.
Responsibilities:
Responsible for the safe delivery of patient care:
- Assists the Professional Nurse with the assessment of nursing care needs and implementation of the plan of care.
- Performs selected procedures and treatments according to standards and protocols.
- Inserts intravenous lines, including INTs.
- Hangs labeled intravenous solutions, including 20 meq KCL/Liter and vitamins, as per policy and procedure.
- Performs suctioning (naso/pharyngeal and oral).
- Sets up enteral feedings, primes tubing, sets up pump, positions patient, flushes feeding, adds ordered nutrients, adds free water, clamps tubing, reports deviations in flow rate, and patient's response.
- Measures central venous pressure (CVP). Changes sterile dressings, including CVP, those with tubes, drains, and/or subcutaneous packing.
- Performs tracheostomy care, including inflating/deflating cuffs, suctioning, and cleaning the inner cannula.
- Removes patient from ventilator and manually ventilates (ambu).
- Inserts urinary catheters, except in patients with genitourinary repair and pediatric patients. Irrigates Foley catheters, whether intermittent or continuous.
- Irrigates and packs selected non-communicating wounds above the fascia level, nasogastric and gastrointestinal tubes.
- Administers medications and treatments as approved by hospital policies.
- Organizes work and sets priorities collaboratively with the professional registered nurse.
- Reports all pertinent observations and documents changes in patient condition, response to interventions, and actions taken.
- Records treatments and procedures she/he is responsible for.
- Maintains patient and family confidentiality per hospital standards.
- Acts as an active patient/family advocate.
- Performs duties outlined in CNA I and CNA II position descriptions.
- Collaborates with other healthcare providers.
- Assists with cardiac monitoring, sets alarm limits, recognizes NSR, and reports lethal dysrhythmias.
- Cares for patients receiving IV fluids, sets up IVs (no meds), primes tubing, and sets up pumps.
- Assists in identifying learning needs and developing plans to meet them.
- Supports and reinforces teaching by the Professional Registered Nurse.
Emergency and Safety Responsibilities:
- Identifies cardiopulmonary arrest and initiates CPR.
- Adheres to universal precautions, safety programs, and infection control measures.
- Reviews fire, disaster, and infection control procedures.
- Performs responsibilities effectively in emergency/code situations and checks emergency equipment.
- Reports unsafe situations to the appropriate personnel.
- Lifts correctly, utilizes assistive devices, maintains a safe environment, and reports equipment needs.
- Uses side rails and restraints per policy, and adheres to fall precautions and observation protocols.
Professional Conduct:
- Engages in lifelong learning to foster a learning organization and professional behavior.
- Maintains competency requirements per nursing credentialing policies.
- Demonstrates reliable attendance, punctuality, and completes assignments timely.
- Responds flexibly to department needs.
- Uses resources cost-effectively.
- Participates in unit activities, meetings, and projects like Quality Assurance.
- Participates in orientation and staff education programs.
- Establishes annual developmental goals with the Clinical Manager.
- Uses appropriate resources to care for patients and families.
Other Information:
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
Must have current Rhode Island LPN licensure.
Successful completion of hospital orientation and credentialing.
Certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS).
Demonstrates knowledge of aging, human development, and cultural considerations in care.
EXPERIENCE:
Two years of medical/surgical and telemetry nursing experience required.
Endoscopy experience preferred.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Extensive walking, standing, lifting, positioning, and pushing patients.
