Job Description

Provides nursing care within the scope defined by Division (F) of Section 4723.01 of the Ohio Revised Code under the supervision of a registered nurse, licensed physician, dentist, podiatrist, optometrist, or chiropractor. Duties include:

  • Administering oxygen, applying sterile dressings, inserting catheters, reinserting gastrostomy tubes, suctioning, irrigating wounds, giving enemas and douches, and collecting specimens.
  • Performing dialysis treatments, operating hemodialysis equipment, and monitoring patients during procedures.
  • Assisting physicians with physical examinations, treatments, and laboratory tests.
  • Responding to emergencies by providing first aid, performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and restraining patients when necessary.
  • Administering controlled substances such as narcotics and minor tranquilizers, as well as non-controlled medications in oral, rectal, topical, or injectable forms (intramuscular and subcutaneous injections only), and providing medication instructions to patients.

Maintains medication accountability by charting patient records, preparing and counting medications, and managing medication inventory along with medical equipment and supplies. Observes, documents, and reports patient conditions including medication reactions, treatment responses, behavior, and progress. Prepares and maintains related reports and records such as unusual incident reports, patient records, medication reports, seclusion/restraint logs, patient kardex, and team plans.

Delivers general nursing care, direct care, and programming support, including:

  • Taking patient vital signs.
  • Assisting with personal grooming, hygiene, bathing, and daily living activities.
  • Administering topical ointments and solutions, as well as eye, ear, and nose drops.
  • Repositioning patients and responding to patient alarms.
  • Scheduling medical appointments and escorting patients.
  • Assisting with recreational activities and providing one-to-one or group activities according to treatment plans.

Provides guidance, orientation, and training to lower-level direct care staff such as hospital aides, orderlies, and psychiatric attendants in delivering unskilled nursing care including dressing, bathing, and feeding patients. Participates in meetings such as staff conferences, committees, interdisciplinary team meetings, in-service training programs, and nursing meetings as assigned.

Orders medications and medical supplies; maintains cleanliness of the nurses’ station and medication room/medication cart by cleaning, sterilizing, restocking, and defrosting medication refrigerators. Performs clerical duties including answering phones and filing.

  • Licensed practical nursing procedures and pharmacology.
  • Client and patient care, first aid, CPR, and general hospital practices and procedures.
  • Agency, institutional, hospital, or clinic policies and HIPAA regulations.
  • Human relations, inventory control, and employee training and development.

Skills in:

  • Using medical equipment such as respirators, dialysis machines, sterilizers, oxygen equipment, and blood pressure cuffs.
  • Administering hypodermic injections and operating personal computers.

Abilities include:

  • Understanding practical nursing concepts and managing mostly concrete variables.
  • Recognizing unusual or threatening conditions and taking appropriate emergency actions.
  • Developing good rapport with patients or residents.
  • Following manuals and verbal instructions related to practical nursing.
  • Demonstrating dexterity to administer injections and perform medical treatments.
  • Exerting strength to move, reposition, or restrain patients.
